Bound by Definition
Bound By Definition is a photographic series that explores the weight of gender expectations and the potential for liberation beyond traditional roles. Using the symbolic language of color, the series examines how societal norms dictate gender identity. The images depict a progression from restriction to self-definition, beginning with a man and a woman pulling blue and pink cloth over each other’s heads to represent imposed gender roles. As the series unfolds, the woman’s journey is highlighted—she first struggles under the weight of expectations but gradually reclaims her agency. The introduction of red cloth symbolizes both power and sacrifice, referencing menstruation and societal expectations of femininity.
The climax of the series captures the act of resistance, where the woman pulls back against the red cloth, pushing against restrictive norms. The final images shift toward reconciliation, with the woman placing the pink cloth on the man’s heart, acknowledging his vulnerability, and concluding with both figures wearing pink and red together. This visual narrative challenges rigid gender binaries, emphasizing that strength, vulnerability, and compassion are not exclusive to any gender. Through this work, Beyond Binaries invites viewers to reflect on the fluidity of identity and the shared humanity beyond societal expectations.
